Seán Shanahan
Blue
20 October - 17 November 2001
The Kerlin Gallery is very pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Seán Shanahan from
20 October to 17 November.
While Shanahan was educated in London and Madrid he has for the past decade lived and worked in Sartirana, in Northern Italy. A painter of reticent abstractions, he has often pitted an understated use of line and colour against the more naturally recalcitrant qualities of a variety of occasionally improbable supports such as steel, wood and in the most recent work, Medium Density Fibreboard.
"The first sensation is one of a fortunate island where the eye can rest, where one can breath in rare calm and purity. Keep looking for a while, there's no need yet to be distracted, just go on enjoying looking at them. Once you have got over your initial surprise, you will notice two things; the colours are not still but in motion, they shine intermittently and pulsate like waves."Eugenio Albert Schatz
Commenting on the sources for his new exhibition the artist says "This exhibition comes from a dream in which I walked through my upcoming show of paintings, all blue, noting the formats and hues, surprised as all the formats and hues were very different from what I'd done before. On awaking I set out to make and recognise what I'd dreamt. An experience I've never had before."
Shanahan has exhibited widely throughout Europe since the early 1980s, and has had numerous solo shows in Italy, the Netherlands and Germany. In recent years these include exhibitions at the Slewe Galerie, Amsterdam, Galleria Grossetti, Milan, Baukunst, Cologne, Galerie M Jordan b.Devarriuex, Paris, Orchard Gallery, Derry, in Ireland and Edition X, Cologne. Group shows include "Antonio Scaccabarozzi, Stephanè Bordarier and Seán Shanahan" Le 19, Centre Regional d'Art contemporian, Montbéliard, 2000, 'Shifting Ground', Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, 2000, Peter Davis,Callum Innes and Seán Shanahan, Slewe Galerie,Amsterdam, 1999, Residue, Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, 1997 and L'Imaginaire Irlandais, Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris.1996.
